Why this event matters

Beckett was three months old when his parent’s brought him to their local emergency room. He was having trouble breathing and they found red spots in his diaper. After running a number of tests, Beckett was immediately transferred by ambulance to a children’s hospital after he suddenly turned blue. Whisked into the intensive care unit (ICU), Beckett was intubated and tests showed his heart was severely enlarged. Beckett’s parents went from having a healthy newborn to being told that a heart transplant was the only option for their son. Beckett would need to be transferred to a hospital with a heart transplant program. While weighing options, the feedback was clear: UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital was where Beckett needed to go.

Arriving at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital on Christmas Eve 2014, Beckett’s family met every member of the heart transplant team and began creating his care plan. Beckett was listed for a heart transplant to give him the best chance of survival while he waited, he was implanted with the Berlin Heart, a device that pumps blood directly to the body and improves the ability of major organs to function. Just 10 days later, Beckett’s family got the call they were hoping for, and Beckett successfully underwent a heart transplant. Today, Beckett is monitored through routine laboratory work and clinic visits. He loves making music and learning new songs with his father, as well as playing with his two younger sisters, Harper and Danny. He celebrated the seventh anniversary of his heart transplant in 2022.
